Beijing Jiaotong University (BJTU) is a national key university under the direct administration of the Ministry of Education, and jointly funded by the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Transport, the Beijing Municipal Government and the State Railway Group Co., Ltd. (CHINA RAILWAY). It is also a university under the “Project 211” and “985 Innovation Platform for Dominant Engineering Discipline”.

The law discipline of BJTU has a long history. Since the beginning of the 20th century, courses have been taught by famous professors, such as Constitutional Law and Public International Law. Xiang Zhejun, the prosecutor who represented China in the International Military Tribunal for the Far East to accuse Japanese war criminals, was one of the professors of the International Law at that time. After a hundred years of vicissitudes, coincided with the prosperity of law, the Department of Law was founded in 1995. It started to enroll law-majored graduates in 2004. In 2009, it was granted for the degree-conferring authorization for Master’s Degree in Law, and in 2010, it has a series of ladder-style development including the authorization for conferring a Master's Degree in Law Science as a first-level discipline. In 2012, the School of Law was established.

There are 41 full-time faculty members (8 professors, 15 associate professors and 18 lecturers) in the School of Law, more than 85% of which has a PhD degree, and 13 teaching assistants and administrators. The School of Law has established the Department of Public Law, Department of International Law, and Department of Civil, Commercial and Economic Law, and has the provincial and ministerial platforms such as the Beijing Social Construction Institute of BJTU, China Railway Law Research Center of BJTU and other research institutions. It’s the unit where the president of the Beijing Transportation Law Research Association belongs. 

The School of Law recruits undergraduates and postgraduates from all over the country. The undergraduate program of law is a national first-class undergraduate major construction site, and it is also an authorization site to confer a Master's Degree in Law Science as a first-level discipline and to confer a Master's Degree in Law. Currently, the first-level discipline of law consists of five second-level disciplines, including Constitutional and Administrative Law, Criminal Law, Civil and Commercial Law, Economic Law and International Law. We recruit postgraduates with a Master's Degree in Law (including full-time and part-time). In the 2021 China University Major Rankings, the comprehensive rating of Beijing Jiaotong University's law major is A (2%-10%), ranking 59th in the national law majors.  Under the premise of a solid foundation, a wide range and a comprehensive strengthening of legal theory, the School of Law demonstrates its specialty and talent cultivation characteristics through three reliances: relying on the university’s world-class transportation discipline to strengthen the training of students with the characteristics of "law + transportation logistics"; relying on the university’s domestic first-class economic management discipline to strengthen the training of students with the characteristics of "law + economic management"; relying on the university’s engineering background and the establishment of the National School of Secrets to strengthen the training of students with the characteristics of "law + information security". Closely following the “Belt and Road” and “High-speed Railway Going Global” initiatives, the School of Law cultivates outstanding foreign-related legal talents with professional characteristics. The graduates are equipped with a solid theoretical foundation and outstanding practical ability, and have always been well received by employers. Some alumni have grown into pillars of the socialist legal construction with Chinese characteristics.

The School of Law attaches great importance to international cooperation and exchanges, actively improves the scale and level of foreign exchanges, and expands international cooperation projects. The academic influence and internationalization level in the field of legal education and scientific research have been significantly improved. The School of Law has signed exchange training agreements with Soochow University, Yang Ming Chiao Tung University and Aletheia University in the Taiwan region of China. It has established a good cooperative relationship with St. John's University, Ohio State University, College of William and Mary, University of Wisconsin-Madison in USA, and Lancaster University in UK in the aspects of LL.M projects, mutual visits of teachers, scientific research cooperation, summer projects and so on.

The School of Law actively gives full play to its disciplinary advantages to serve the society. By carrying out systematic researches on the legal system of transportation, we help to build a strong transportation country. With deeply involved in the revision of confidentiality legislation, we help to promote the construction of the national confidentiality legal system. As a think tank, we offer constructive solutions for international dialogues and domestic governance challenges. While undertaking a number of high-level legal personnel trainings, we provide a long-term legal talent training for railway transportation enterprises.

With the mission of “cultivating outstanding legal talents, creating first-class legal achievements, and serving the strategy of governing the country according to law”, and with the value of “cultivating law, enlightening morality, promoting perseverance and helping the world”, the School of Law is striving towards the goal of "a first-class law school with distinctive characteristics".
